Improved Administration of Justice, Costa
Rica
USAID/Costa Rica
1988
MSD
provided economic and technical assistance to consolidate
and modernize the administration of justice in Costa Rica
by enhancing sector coordination and planning; strengthening
professional judicial education and training; and improving
availability of up-to-date information on legislation currently
in force. Major achievements include the development
of the National Commission as an effective instrument for
planning, promoting, monitoring, and evaluating the execution
of a coordinated national criminal justice sector program
in coordination with key justice sector institutions; strengthening
of the Judicial School involved in the training of judicial
professionals; and creation of an automated system providing
current, easily accessible information on legislation in force.
The design of the Justice Sector Reform Project in Costa Rica
served as a catalyst for the conduct of a comprehensive range
of reform activities, namely, brining together key justice
sector counterparts and/or actors interested in judicial reform,
raising awareness of the need for comprehensive and integrated
reforms to address training of justice system officials and
enhancing legislation through automation.
